I’m not sure who used the term “chocolate milk” first when referring to Black mothers’ breastmilk, but I know that Ms. Phaedra Parks definitely took it mainstream.
After the birth of her second son, Dylan, Ms. Parks let the world see the ins and outs of breastfeeding while being a professional. In her words, a woman with several “jobs.”
She and her Real Housewives of Atlanta cast members went on a trip to Savannah, Georgia. Ms. Parks took her breast pump with her and explained to the ladies that she only gives the best “chocolate milk” to her son Mr. President. She lovingly calls her oldest son, Aidan, the Prince and his little brother is the President.
I just love, love, love Phaedra for allowing so many mothers and aspiring mothers see her juggle breastfeeding, travel and work. She inspired a lot of women to be encouraged to breastfeed. While many of us are busy, it’s hard to say that we have as many “jobs” as Ms. Parks. And if she can do it, so can we.
Let the babies say, cheers, to mama’s chocolate milk.
