We decided to work with a doula because we wanted to have a natural birth. A doula embodies the knowledge of our Ancestors when it comes to natural childbirth, which has been missed or replaced with modern ways. We wanted someone who understood our needs, knowledgeable about the birthing process, caring, and hands on.
Freya was everything we wanted and more in a doula. She was very encouraging throughout the entire pregnancy. Freya provided information on health and fitness during and post pregnancy.
She helped me tremendously during labor with natural pain management.
She assisted me with breastfeeding after our son was born. In addition, Freya did postnatal visits which were great and much needed. Being a new mom the advice, information, and encouragement she provided went a long way and help me with this new chapter in our life. I, probably like most men, had no idea what a doula did. After meeting with Freya, I learned quite a bit and felt comfortable in having her be a part of our birth experience.

I am so glad I had Freya help me throughout my pregnancy and labor! I began working with Freya a few months prior to my May 2018 due date and she was such a blessing to us.

When I found out I was 6 weeks pregnant, I started looking for a doula because this was my first child and I wanted everything to be done naturally and didn't know where to start. I chose Root Mama after an extensive search because The company resonated with me. Freya was very knowledgeable about natural birth and breastfeeding. This was especially important to me because everyone around me would only speak about how hard it was going to be. I needed someone in my corner "rooting" for me.
My doula helped me prepare for a natural birth by helping me come up with a birth plan, assisting in finding a midwife, holding classes about the process and exercises to help with contractions, walking me through everything step by step, offering ideas about a topic when I had none, helping come up with alternatives to medication, customizing herbal tea blends, doing prenatal yoga and meditation with me, etc. the list goes on. The assistance she provided during my pregnancy was invaluable. She really made the process for me as seamless as possible.
At my labor, my doula was instrumental in helping me relax, breathe, and keep my eye on the main goal. She did the exercises with me to help with contractions when my spouse needed a break. She kept a cool towel for me. She provided essential oils, a jazz playlist and a soothing tone. She always reminded me that the pain was bringing me closer to my beautiful baby boy. She also kept stressors and negativity out of my birthing room. She also made sure I had snacks and juice to stay nourished and hydrated. My doula worked with my midwives to ensure that I did not have to stray away from my birth plan. My midwife and doula were the perfect team working to make sure I had everything I needed.
After I had my baby, my doula came to my home and washed dishes, cooked, folded clothes, made me an herbal bath, did meditation with me and we recited positive affirmations/visualizations of my child's bright future. She also assisted in healing my womb. She was there whenever I had questions and rushed to my side when I went into labor. It was especially nice to take a nice herbal bath and relax while someone cooked and did household chores. I really know that she loves her work and cares deeply for her mothers. I don't want to know what my birth experience would have been like without RootMama. It was the complete experience. She provided assistance not only physically but mentally and spiritually as well.

Nkoyo was da bomb a** doula! Honestly, she was more than a doula for me and my baby. She was my Super Wombman. Throughout my entire labor, she was comforting, attentive, supportive and an exceptionally excellent doula. During my labor contractions were intense.

I started looking for a doula because I felt like I needed extra emotional support, and I wanted some tips to help my pregnancy and birth process run smoothly. I wanted a doula who was gentle, open-minded and honest; someone who I could talk to and learn vast knowledge from.
During my pregnancy, Freya and the RootMama team discussed my nutritional intake and talked about my food consumption throughout the week. She also recommended prenatal exercises to strengthen my pelvic floor and prepare for a home birth. She made sure I was I felt supported throughout my pregnancy.

One of the best decisions I made was hiring Freya as my doula. Not only did she help me remain calm throughout the overall pregnancy and labor process, she was never afraid to ask the hard questions, which we new moms sometimes shy away from.
Her techniques were amazing. Although there were 6 people present at my home during labor, when surges (contractions) came, I found myself calling Freya's name. She was there to guide and rock me through them. She encourages, uplifts, and supports throughout the entire process.

Her techniques were amazing. Although there were 6 people present at my home during labor, when surges (contractions) came, I found myself calling Freya's name. She was there to guide and rock me through them. She encourages, uplifts, and supports throughout the entire process.

Every mom deserves to experience someone there to assist in any way to improve and help your birthing experience. It will give you a greater appreciation overall. It was enlightening and refreshing to have someone there to totally support me.
I really enjoyed the massages, and the motivational words were very encouraging, and being there, in general, like walking with me, running errands, etc. Having a doula is an experience all mothers should have.
My entire family liked my doula and was happy with the services and impressed with level of attention Freya was giving to me. Having RootMama definitely made me feel more at ease about giving birth. Being a first-time mom, there were things I didn’t know and didn’t think to question. It was especially nice having someone else support my birthing and lifestyle choices. It was also great to have doula by my side, coaching me, and helping me through the delivery. The after care services were amazing. Freya prepared a sitz bath that was very relaxing and tended to a few chores around the house! If you're really into going the natural route, RootMama also provides placenta encapsulation. I was very impressed with the presentation of my capsules and umbilical cord. I would definitely recommend RootMama for your doula services!

After I had my baby, RootMama provided me meal preparation, light housekeeping, breastfeeding support, emotional support, community resources, time for exercise, laundry, and referrals.
While absolutely exhilarating, having a new baby comes with a variety of challenges. Having Freya come by for postpartum support was delightful for my family. Being able to ask questions, share ideas, and even just talk with her was very reassuring. She had access to so much information. When I brought up problems and concerns, she had solutions, and good ones!
The best part of having a doula would have to be the encouragement aspect. One of my main goals is to be in the best health and lose the baby weight I had gained, not only for myself but so I can be around for many years for my new baby. Freya went on a walk with me and the baby, showed me a quick recipe on how to make healthy food in a fraction of time, and gave me resources to motherly groups that would keep me active and accountable after she departed.
I would have to say my perception of doula services absolutely changed after my visit with RootMama. I had no clue that they had so much knowledge when it comes to the postpartum woman's needs. Whether it was breastfeeding suggestions or nutritional guidance, Freya had a plethora of knowledge and guidance.
I will most definitely use a doula in the future. I regret not having one before delivery, but am happy I didn't miss out completely on the experience of getting to connect with RootMama and all they have to offer. The webinar they hosted literally saved my sanity and was refreshing to hear RootMama explain the hormonal and postpartum feelings I was under at the time was absolutely normal.
If Baby Bentley could talk, he would say thank you for encouraging my mother to stay on track with diet and exercise. This will keep us together and healthy for many years. P.S - you did a wonderful job putting my clothes away and getting me to sleep. :)
