Rejoice. Remy Ma is pregnant. She renewed her marital vows with her husband, Paposse. I know that he has to be the happiest man alive right now. They have been planning on this baby for years. Last year, Remy Ma experienced an ectopic pregnancy.
After her loss, she took sometime to sort some things in her life and then she made a commitment to improve her health before going forward with IVF (in vitro fertilization). And, that was very wise of her. Since she’s a more seasoned mother, it’s very important to be as healthy as possible before conception. Meet Nicole Deggins. She has been a nurse-midwife since 1999. Nicole shares part of her fertility journey and how she experienced and overcame loss. She shares her triumphs and advice for women trying to conceive.
RootMama: Tell us a little something about you. Nicole: I do birth advocacy work and run Sista Midwife Productions. My goal is to help shift the birth paradigm from fear to celebration. I was born and raised in New Orleans where I currently live and work. I have one daughter, Kelile. I love to travel, I love to have fun, I love to laugh and I love to talk about birth and pregnancy and mommyhood. RootMama: Can you speak more about the paradigm shift you hope to see in birth? Women of childbearing age should take extra precaution to be healthy in case of pregnancy. Some of you may be actively trying to get pregnant. You may be in a relationship and thinking of getting pregnant “when the time is right.” You might not be in a relationship right now, but know that you want to have children one day. There are things that you can do to start your pregnancy on a healthy note.
Many women don’t find out that they’re pregnant until about the 8th or 9th week of pregnancy. By that time, many neurological developments have already occurred. Early prenatal care can help you get started on a healthy path, but major development has already occurred before that first prenatal visit. Researchers have recently “discovered” that preconception obesity negatively affects birth outcomes. Essentially, when a mom is severely overweight or obese, this can cause problems with her pregnancy and result in a baby with health complications.
Two problematic dichotomies exist when it comes to weight. On one end, body politic advocates push for accepting the fat body and embracing being overweight.
